This collection comprises material relating to the English Sewing Co. Ltd, which includes a Staff booklet from English Sewing Cotton Co Ltd at Crofthead Works, 1950. The original Crofthead mill was founded in 1792 by James Orr & Co and purchased by R.F. & J Alexander in 1859 who already owned cotton mills in Duke street, Glasgow. R.F. & J Alexander's cotton mill then became part of the English Sewing Cotton Co Ltd in 1898. In 1963 the English Sewing Co Ltd entered into partnership with Tootal Broadhurst Lee Co Ltd, still trading under its own name. In 1969 the company merged with Calico Printers Association to form Calico English Ltd and in 1973 the company changes its name to Tootal Brand. The mill finally closed in 1992 with transferral of remaining production and staff to mill in Newton Mearns factory.
