General notes:
The Volunteer Rifle Corps, of which the Thornliebank Volunteers were a part, were set up in the late 18th century to help local authorities at times of civil unrest. By 1890 they had been re-organised and each had been affiliated to a local regiment. In 1906, the volunteer system was further reformed by Lord Haldane, with the abolition of the Volunteer Corps and their replacement by the Territorial Army.
