General notes:
Netherplace bleachworks opened in 1818 on the site of a former printworks. By 1861 it was employing over 400 people many of whom came from Ireland or the Highlands. The majority of the workers were women who were housed in the factory’s ‘women house’. The factory was ideally situated near to Newton Mearns, a thriving local village with an abundant supply of good water. Netherplace became part of English Sewing Ltd. (Tootal Group) in 1986 and became one of the finest dyeworks in Europe, equipped with the latest computer technology. In 1993 it changed hands again becoming part of Coats Barbour but finally closed around a decade later.
