General notes:
Walter Crum (1796-1867) was in sole charge of Thornliebank Printworks from 1819 and spared no expense to have the finest machinery available. It was said of Thornliebank, "Here were produced the finest textiles in Europe". He was a distinguished chemist and a pioneer in adapting chemistry to calico printing. His work on indigo was widely recognised and his research covered topics such as, 'The influence of the moon on the weather'. He was the father-in-law of William Thomson, Lord Kelvin (1824-1907), a distinguished mathematician and physicist whose research resulted in the laying of the first submarine Atlantic cable for the transmission of electric currents.
