Pollok was born at North Moorhouse Farm, Eaglesham in 1798 and later studied at Glasgow College. In 1827 he was licensed to preach the gospel. Pollok died of tuberculosis later that year and was buried at Southampton where he had been on his way to Italy. On 24th September 1900, the Robert Pollok Monument was unveiled to his memory at Loganswell at the junction of the Glasgow/Ayr Road and the Old Mearns Road.
