General notes:
Hazelden began after 1820 as a bleachfield, converting in 1838 to calico printing. It seems to have been founded by John Hall of Wellmeadow. By 1852 it returned to bleaching and around 1900 became a silk printing works under James Melville. By 1846 it employed 300 people many of whom were incomers whose sons and daughters became apprentices employed as block and print cutters. When the silk works failed it was rumoured that its silk printing techniques had been stolen by rivals.
