General notes:
Holmwood House was designed by Alexander 'Greek' Thomson. It is one of Thomson's most important works and was listed Category A by the Secretary of State for Scotland on 17 October 1967. It was built in 1857-58 for James Couper, a paper maker at nearby Millholm Mill, and his first wife Marion Harvey (1824-69).
