General notes:
We have no record of a curling stone workshop in Eaglesham, but there have been a couple of suggestions of possible locations for this scene. One is the curling stone works at Mauchline, which still operates today. Another is an old mill in Beith called Knowes Mill, which apparently operated as a curling stone workshop for a short time in the late 19th century. John Maguire and his family were living in Knowehead in Beith according to the 1891 census. However, curling historian Sheriff David Smith believes that the painting most likely shows Thomas Thorburn's curling workshop, also in Beith.
