General notes:
This painting is described on the reverse as a self portrait, but it has been suggested that it is in fact Maguire's older son, John (known as Jack). Firstly, we have paintings of his two other children, Annie and Russell, so it seems plausible that he would have painted all three. Secondly, the style of dress on this young looking man dates him to the early twentieth century, when John Maguire would have been nearing 40 years old.
