General notes:
The women are dressed in the clothes typical of female agricultural workers - collarless blouses, 'drugget' aprons and skirts above the ankle to give freedom of movement. Young single women found employment as dairy maids, often 'living in' with the farmers family or with other farm servants. Wages were much lower in agricultural work than in the mills or domestic service, but many country girls preferred the familiarity of rural life.
