After the fire of 1880 a fire fighting force was recruited from among the men who worked at the mill. They were well equipped with their own fire engine and were given training in fire fighting techniques. This in-house fire brigade were very aware of risks and were alert for any signs of danger when they could take immediate action. There seems to have been no serious fires following 1880.
