The Poll Tax roll of 1695 lists Polnoon Farm, owned by the Wallace family as supporting 3 households. In the 18th century Alexander, 10th Earl of Eglinton, who was a great agricultural improver, settled in the farms men bred to farming and open to new techniques. The Steven family owned Polnoon through the 19th century and into the 20th century. The name Polnoon derives from the word 'poind' ie. ransom exacted by Sir John Montgomery for the capture of Sir Henry Percy, with which he built Polnoon Castle.
