General notes:
These buildings include Netherplace Woman House, a boarding house for the single women who had come to work at nearby Netherplace and Tofts works. The women mainly came from the Highlands and Ireland. The First Statistical Account of 1796 mentions two bleachfields, Wellmeadow and Broom, employing 65 people. By the mid-19th century at least 500 were employed. Some lived in Newton Mearns but most lived in the purpose built cottages near the works.
