General notes:
Barrhead's modern, scientifically designed works begain in 1899 and was the envy of neighbouring towns and attracted attention from all over Britain. The ceremony was performed by Barrhead's first Provost William Shanks, nephew of the founder of Barrhead's famouse Shanks company. After the opening of the Gorbals Waterworks (1860-1865), a piped water supply was introduced to almost every tenement and to all private houses. Sewers had been laid in Barrhead as early as 1866 and for months the Main Street was in a state of chaos with irate letters to the press about all the mud and mess. From Barrhead Museum Collection B1655
