General notes:
This is a First World War Company, Barrhead which recruited at least 2000 men over the four years. After 1908 the Burgh's 300 Volunteers had given way to a new generation of young territorial soldiers. On the 5 August 1914, 'G' Company of the 6th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (84 men) mobilized at the Drill Hall, Paisley Road. In May 1914 the Battalion left for France. The survivors returned after Armistice, 11th November 1918. On mobilization day, John Shanks, father of Lieutenant Jack Shanks of 'G' Company addressed the men. He gave a new testament to each soldier which many men carried throughout the war. From Barrhead Museum Collection B2207
