General notes:
From Barrhead Museum Collection B2109. The Levern Mill, for cotton and spinning, was the second one built in Scotland in 1780 by Ramsey, Livingstone and Love. Spinning was carried out on a water-frame which spun several thousand threads simultaneously. This frame was soon superceded by more sophisticated machinery and within 20 years the old Dovecot Mill became obsolete and was replaced by a big, new building with space for the new machinery. The newer Levern Mill stood as a ruin until 1969 when it was declared unsafe and was demolished to become part of a riverside park in Barrhead.
