General notes:
In 1835, the Eaglesham Estate was owned by Archibald, the 13th Earl of Eglinton. Hugh, the 12th Earl of Eglinton, had left a massive debt when he died in 1819 largely as a result of his investment in a gigantic harbour on his estate at Ardrossan and a canal at Glasgow to connect his harbour to the city. Archibald failed to improve finances, spending huge amounts on the Eglinton Tournament in 1839. In 1844 the estate was sold to Allan and James Gilmour.
