According to the New Statistical Account of 1840, at that time there were seven miles of parish roads in Eaglesham, and seven miles of turnpike roads.One of the well-known former residents of the toll house was Mrs. Agnes Arneil Plenderleith, or %27Aggie%27. She started a shop, which was a handy place for passing cyclists and travellers to get refreshments and a rest.
