General notes:
The location chosen for Mearns Castle provided a natural defence on three sides by the landfall, so the south, west and north walls were built eight feet thick. The east wall was built ten feet thick, as it was considered to be the most vulnerable point. However as far as we know, no military action ever took place at the castle.
