General notes:
The church in this picture was built in 1836 for the Secession congregation. It was demolished in 1938 and replaced by the present-day Newton Mearns Parish Church building. The church dates back to 1743 when a unit of the Secession Church broke away from the Established Church out of dissatisfaction with the settlement of 1690. The Seceeders who were basically Covenanters, saw themselves as guardians of the old austere, Covenanting standards and were disturbed by the changing values and customs emerging as Glasgow opened up as a major trading centre. By 1747, the Church was split between Anti-Burghers and Burghers (those who took the Burgess oath to "profess and allow the true religion". After several court hearings, the Burghers won the church. The dispute was settled by 1820.
