General notes:
Neilston-born engineer John Robertson designed the engine for the Comet steamship, the first vessel in Europe to sail a successful commercial service. This photo was taken outside the Vulcan Foundry of Robert Napier & Sons, Glasgow, in 1862. Robertson was about to oversee the transportation of the Comet's engine to London, for display at the Museum of Patents in Kensington, (now the Science Museum), where it remains to this day.
