General notes:
Although for many years 'cotton was king' there were other important industries. Local coal seams were exploited. There were mines tunnelling the steep banks of the river near Gateside and bell pits near Kelburn Street and Hurlet. There was also a copperas works at Hurlet. Copperas was used to dye and print textiles. The manufacturing process used in the Hurlet Chemical Works resulted in red waste material which filled the Hurlet Quarry forming the 'Red Hills of Hurlet'.
