From 1943 until 1952 every man, woman and child had to carry an identity card. This one was a blue card, introduced in 1943, which identified the bearer as an adult. Cards were issued in an effort to keep track of population statistics which were affected by mobilisation as well as the movement of large numbers due to evacuation. Cards were also important if rationing had to be introduced.
