General notes:
The image shows Thomas Struthers Smith outside Crosslees House. He was the son of Thomas Smith who was a Glasgow merchant, and purchased the land of Eastwood from Neil Thomson in 1845. Thomas Smith's company was Anderson and Smith which was based initially in Royal Exchange Square, and later in 33 Renfield Street. He was on the committee of the Lanarkshire and Galloway Junction Railway, and was a member of the Justice of the Peace for Pollokshaws district of Renfrewshire and was an active member of the Cathcart and Eastwood Farmers Society, and he was a church elder. Throughout the 1850's he often offered pieces of his land to feu in order for them to build houses. The Eastwood and Eastwood Park house were later sold to Joseph C. Wakefield in 1864. Thomas is listed as a West India merchant in the 1851 census. The house in the photograph is Crosslees House. Long after Thomas Smith's death, the large house became a children's home, and was first recorded as this in 1948/49. The original home was split into two separate houses around 1953/54. Each home had a separate name; Atholl and Argyle. However, in documents from 1961/62, it states that the houses again became one dwelling, named Crosslees Children's Home. The older building is reported to have been demolished around 1970/71.
