General notes:
The Gorbals Gravitational Water Company was established in 1846 to provide water for the Gorbals district of Glasgow. Water was to be drawn from the Brock burn and its tributaries from within the parish of Neilston. in 1847-48, three reservoirs were constructed in the Barrhead area: Ryat Linn, Walkmill Glen and Littleton. Then in 1853-54 Balgray Reservoir was constructed. In 1855 the company was bought over by Glasgow Corporation Water Works and managed by the City of Glasgow.
