This great Anthology has without question introduced more people to poetry than any other collection. Educated at Charterhouse and Balliol, Francis Turner Palgrave was Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1885 to 1895 and the author of several volumes of poetry and essays, but he is remembered essentially for the present anthology, still the most famous of its kind. Ever since its publication, 'The golden treasury of English songs and lyrics has created interest in poetry, for Palgrave brought to its compilation a wide knowledge of literature and fine taste.
