General notes:
The lands of South Moorhouse, which comprised parts of the Eaglesham Estate, had been purchased in two lots by Allan Gilmour in 1838 and 1844. It was this latter purchase that included Bennan Loch and the immediately surrounding lands. Parts of the lands were sold off from the late 19th century onwards, often for public works such as the waterworks at South Moorhouse and nearby reservoirs such as Lochcraig.
