General notes:
On the right of this picture is a horse and cart outside Porter's Inn. Up to 1883, carters would have had to pay tolls, established in 1750. Mail coaches were exempt. James Osborne's provisions store is visible in this picture, as is the water fountain erected in memory of William Mann (1853-1904) by his daughter. William was a great temperance campaigner and was instrumental in bringing a piped water supply to the village.
