They were part of third raising of Volunteer Rifle Corps following the threat of invasion by Napoleon the Third. They were mostly independent Corps each choosing their own uniform and electing their own officers. By 1890 permanent units were each affiliated to their local county regiment. Following the Boer War, Lord Haldane in 1906 re-organised the British Army, abolished the Volunteers and set up a Territorial Force.
