General notes:
Handball was a popular sport in Victorian and Edwardian times and the workers at Crofthead Mill had a successful team. Handball was played against a wall which was specially built or against an existing wall such as a gable. Crofthead Mill had its own handball pitch in Neilston and generally encouraged a number of sporting and leisure activities. This picture shows players dressed for the game with some members holding the small leather balls they used. Their shirt sleeves and trousers are held up with elasticated belts. The young members played the game in their bare feet.
