General notes:
On 15 March 1449, Lord Herbert Maxwell of Carlaverock and Mearns obtained a licence from King James II "to build a castle and to surround and fortify it with walls and ditches, to strengthen it by iron gates and to erect on top of it all warlike apparatus necessary for its defence". The castle was built on the site of an older wooden castle built by Roland de Mearns. During the Covenanting period it was occupied by a garrison of dragoons. Originally, the castle would have been surrounded by a moat and drawbridge. The castle was incorporated into the Maxwell Mearns Church in 1971 and is now a category 'A' listed building.
