General notes:
This was originally the King's Well Inn which was on the old main route to Kilmarnock. Prior to the 'New Line' or new road to Kilmarnock being established in 1832, the Inn was an extremely busy place with as many as 16 stage coaches stopping there in one day. the opening of the new road took trade away from the inn and it became a farm steading. The inn and farm was supposedly named after a stop made there by King James VI & I on his way to Sorn Castle in Ayrshire. Information from 'A History of Mearns' by J A Strang, Vol I pp38-39.
