General notes:
In the early 20th century, quoits was popular with the working population. Cross Arthurlie Quoiting Club, Barrhead, pictured 1914, probably played at the Arthurlie ground situated behind Gillies Hotel ( Arthurlie Inns), and used by many of the Heys printfield workers. Quoits was a game where players threw rings (usually made of iron), at a stake called a hob. Similar to quoits was "Pitching Pennies", involving a lump of clay (the "bob") and metal discs (made in Shanks Tubal Works Brass Foundry). This game was extremely popular in Barrhead, played at every street corner and sometimes involving high stakes with bets on various players. Apparently William Hamilton (Billy Pigs) was known as the Barrhead champion. From Barrhead Museum Collection
