General notes:
Many Barrhead men found work on the building of the big housing schemes in the town. By 1918, with the return of servicemen, Barrhead had a severe housing shortage. The Housing Act of 1919 intended to provide better cottage type housing with gardens. Bowerwalls was built as a special re-housing scheme for people in sub-standard houses. Unfortunately the new rents were too high for many workers and the first housing scheme in Arthurlie Street was tenanted by teachers and white collar workers. Building really only got under way after the Second World War with more private housing development. From Barrhead Museum Collection B1650
