General notes:
The use of a threshing machine gradually replaced the old method of the flail and light plough drawn by two horses. This early threshing machine went from farm to farm and everyone helped. There has always been a strong, communal feeling in the farming community and it was not unknown for a day's ploughing to be arranged to help a new tenant. Although Balgraystone started out as an individual farm, it became part of a larger unit of many farms owned by Mr. James Fergusson Pollok at the turn of the century and part of the rapidly disappearing agricultural character of Mearns Parish.
