General notes:
In 1926, these mechanics were part of the declining Calico Printers Association which had been formed in 1902 to merge all fims in the calico printing trade. The headquarters were in Manchester, then the hub of the cotton trade. The cotton trade declined after World War 1 and the C.P.A. started to close the smaller works in Scotland. During the trade depression of the 1930s, the larger works were closed e.g. South Arthurlie Printworks. The textile industry of the Levern lasted for over 200 years from 1750, dwindling to a few, specialist firms in the 1970s. Their goods were transported all over the world but mainly to India and South America.
