Dr. John Wilson, Superintendent of Mearnskirk Hospital, wanted to replace cement statues of child figures on display in the hospital grounds with a bronze of Peter Pan. Dr Wilson died before he could see his wish fulfilled, and the statue was dedicated to him as a memorial.
