General notes:
From Barrhead Museum Collection B2063. Also known as Arthurlie Biscuit factory, these buildings were located in Glen Street. Cross Arthurlie Printworks previously stood around the same spot. By 1919, Brownlie's Biscuit Factory, Barrhead, was in decline with only their crumb making business left. Their main outlet were the fish and chip shops which had flourished during the war when meat was scarce. By 1919, Provost Weir arranged to store the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society's flour in Brownlie's Factory where it was totally destroyed on wile night of wind and rain when the Kirkton and Levern Burns overflowed. The case for damages was won on appeal by Brownlie's in the House of Lords but it was a hollow victory as all the damages were swallowed up in legal costs, ultimately causing the backruptcy of Brownlie's.
