General notes:
The Brownlie's business had included a grocery shop, a bread factory and a biscuit factory. By 1919, the Arthurlie Biscuit Factory, Barrhead, was in decline with only the crumb making business left. The main outlet was the fish and chip shops which had flourished during the war when meat was scarce. By 1919, Provost Weir arranged to store the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society's flour in Brownlie's Factory where it was totally destroyed one wild night of wind and rain when the Kirkton and Levern Burns overflowed. The case for damages was won on appeal by Brownlie's in the House of Lords but it was a hollow victory as all the damages were swallowed up in legal costs, ultimately causing the backruptcy of Brownlie's. The manager at the time was John Faichney. The factory was located in Glen Street, Barrhead. Glen Street has now gone but the factory sat partly where the roundabout at Church Road is now and partly on Centenary Park.
