General notes:
William Patrick immigrated to Australia from Barrhead with his wife, Agnes Paterson and their children and started Shanks and Co. in Melbourne, Australia. The donor was told that he was sent to Australia by Shanks & Co., Scotland, to assess the suitability of Australia for the establishment of another branch of Shanks & Co. However, Shanks & Co. in Scotland decided that they did not want to pursue business in Australia, so William obtained authorization from them to operate his own business called Shanks & Co. in Melbourne, Australia. William’s sons William, George (and his sons Alan and Matthew) and Joseph continued with the business after William senior retired due to ill health. Shanks and Co. operated from several different addresses over the years, including 335 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, and also operated a foundry.
